Seeking Justice for Jimmy
On September 28, 2012, the Alameda County Superior Court exonerated Northern California Innocent Project (NCIP) client, Jimmy Dick, and granted his habeas petition. Jimmy, at that time, a 48- year old Navajo, was convicted of second degree murder in 1982. He was 17 at the time of the murder and spent the last 30 years in state custody. The Alameda District Attorney chose not to oppose NCIP’s petition after reviewing the overwhelming evidence NCIP collected. Jimmy pled no contest to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to prison of four years long since served. He is still being held and incarcerated at Pelican Bay State Prison for an assault on another inmate from which the other inmate walked away unscathed which, only because he was serving a life sentence, also carried a life sentence. Jimmy will be 60 years old this year - 2024 spending 40 years in prison for assault and crime he did not commit.
